South Otago Central Heating uses European heating pipes that
have been certified for a life span of 50 years. Piping is laid in
loops and secured to the reinforcing mesh in the slab during
construction.
Each loop runs back to a manifold enabling separate control of different heating zones. All pipework is pneumatically pressure tested before the floor slab is poured and left pressurised during the construction period.
Please note: Care must be taken with the choice of floor coverings. In general, underfloor heating works best with tiled or concrete floor surfaces. It can work well however with carpet and timber floors providing that is known at the design stage.
A typical installation of the pipes can be seen below
For optimum heating effectiveness, some homes employ a radiator & underfloor heating system. Radiators work well in bedrooms, bathrooms and hall ways whereas underfloor is best utilised in the kitchen and living areas where people spend most of their time.
Often the most effective heating solution for a house is achieved via a combination of underfloor heating and radiators. In bedrooms, for example, the times and frequency with which heating is required can vary so a radiator may be the best option because of the rapid intermittent response, even if underfloor pipes serve the rest of the house.
The McKenzie Auto Stoker is used to supply hot water to central
heating systems, which includes underfloor, radiators, fan
convectors and domestic/commercial hot water all year round. It has
the capacity to supply up to 24 - 28 Kw of energy depending on coal
quality .
Automatic coal stokers are the cleanest coal burning appliances
on the market, as the air to fuel
ratio can be set to achieve 95 percent combustion efficiency and
80% thermal combustion
efficiency with smokeless operation.
Underfloor heating is recognised as the most luxurious & comfortable heat for the human body because it warms your feet and is cooler up near your head. Radiant under floor heating uses low temperature water and can be heated by either hydronic heat pumps or boilers.
Depending on the design, the temperature of water used for underfloor heating is typically 40°C to 60°C. The maximum temperature the floor slab should reach is 29°C. On average it is around 26°C. The air temperature produced in the room is approximately 5°C lower than the floor temperature.
These pipes are then connected to a manifold as pictured
above.
